About Us
Maamawi iyaawag PS serves students from Kindergarten through to Grade 8 and is located in the rapidly growing community of North Oshawa in an area known previously for Windfield Farms, a famous horse racing farm. With over 600 students and growing, our school community has the unique opportunity to bring students from diverse backgrounds and living experiences as well as a strong partnership with the Indigenous community. Our name ‘Maamawi iyaawag’ is Anishinaabemowin for ‘gathered together’, which is fitting for a community newly developed and rapidly growing. Our school community will be focused on deepening our understanding of Indigenous education while growing a respectful, caring, safe and welcoming environment that helps students thrive.
Principal’s Message:
Opening a new school is an incredible opportunity, as well as a tremendous responsibility. For me, it will be the highlight of my career! Bringing together staff from across the district who are eager to bring practices such as land-based learning and identity-affirming into our school community, is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for our learners. We are so excited to welcome over 600 students this fall for the very first time. Many of these students were hosted in partner schools in surrounding areas, some for a few years, and this new school offers a chance to not only walk to school but come together as a neighbourhood and community.
We have worked to bring a vision of earthy colours into the school as the school landscape is rich in natural colour and beauty. Natural wood shines throughout. Plants both inside and out add the finishing touches.
Our Indigenous naming has also presented a tremendous opportunity to listen, learn from the Indigenous community and then share this learning with others. We know that we are ready for this important work.
Our focus this fall will be on connecting families and staff together, to build a foundation of partnership that allows students to feel supported while they thrive. Our diverse community is rich with experiences, culture, and a shared commitment to our students.
We are gathered together at Maamawi iyaawag PS, please join our journey.
Sincerely,
K.McKee,
Principal
